Here, Anna Denardin and Samantha Suppiah of the ColMech Crew explore the “ongoing” theme around our colonial histories, presents and futures. This stubborn nature of colonialism is the context behind the inquiries you are exploring in this course.
We will be going back through the different European colonial eras, starting from the Portuguese and Spanish era, following through with the Dutch and British Eras, and the American era.
We will also touch upon the present post-colonial condition and the rise of the Global South, looking ahead to the future of colonialism.
These eras didn't happen one after the other, but rather built upon one another.
They are ongoing, not merely in the sense of persistence through time, but also innovating on the basis of systems and structures established within earlier modes of coloniality in centuries and decades past.
